Grenville-sur-la-Rouge, QC – Savings in municipal expenses and energy consumption are two clear reasons why the Municipality of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge is upgrading its streetlight network to light-emitting diode (LED) technology. "In an era of international treaties adressing climate change and other major environmental issues, it is important that Municipalities do their part," said Grenville-sur-la-Rouge Mayor John Saywell.
Installation of the new fixtures begins the week of December 7.The new LED streetlights are expected to reduce the Municipality’s electricity consumption by an estimated 56%, because LEDs require far less energy than the current, outdated system. That decreased energy use is also expected to result in a 56% savings on energy costs to power the streetlights every year. The upgrade will also reduce maintenance costs by up to 80% because LEDs are a solid-state technology (no moving parts) and last up to four times longer than the Municipality’s existing streetlights.
While consuming far less energy, LED light looks different because it is a whiter, cleaner light that is more targeted to light the street. The directional nature of LEDs will put the light on the road, where it is needed, rather than spilling sideways or upwards. The installation of LED lights will result in improved visual acuity and roadway safety for both vehicle drivers and pedestrians and will also reduce light pollution. Upgrading to LEDs is also an environmentally conscious choice, for it will allow Grenville-sur-la-Rouge to reduce its emission of greenhouse gases by an estimated 4 metric tons per year: the equivalent of the carbon removed by more than 100 tree seedlings grown for ten years.
RealTerm Energy will provide a turnkey solution for the conversion of the Municipality’s streetlights that includes a GIS audit, photometric design, installation, certified recycling, financing and a 10-year warranty. “We are pleased to provide a turnkey service that will maximize energy-efficiency and savings for the Municipality of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge” said Sean Neely, President of RealTerm Energy. “Our primary goal is to make the streetlight system upgrade easy for them.”
Over 140 municipalities in North America have chosen to upgrade to LED street lighting with RealTerm Energy including Niagara Falls and Barrie.
