LED Streetlight Upgrade to Bring Big Savings to Gravenhurst

August 27, 2015

Town Projected to Save 51% on Electricity Costs and Reduce Energy Consumption by 61%

Gravenhurst, ON – The Town of Gravenhurst and RealTerm Energy are pleased to announce their partnership to upgrade existing streetlights in the community to energy-efficient light emitting diodes (LEDs).

Beginning the first week of September, installations crews will upgrade 800 streetlights in the Town. The project is expected to be completed by early October. The Town selected Local Authority Services (LAS) and its partner RealTerm Energy to assess its existing streetlight network, create an energy efficient and cost-effective street lighting design and coordinate the purchase and installation of the new LED streelights from CREE Canada, one of the world’s leading LED manufacturers.

“The Town of Gravenhurst is continually looking for opportunities to increase efficiencies and provide the community with cost effective sustainable services. When LAS provided the Town with an opportunity for a turn-key streetlight conversion program and identified a projected energy savings of up to 51%, it was well aligned with the strategic goals of the Town,” said Andrew Stacey, Director of Infrastructure Services for the Town of Gravenhurst. "The energy cost savings will be utilized to offset capital costs over a 10-year period," he added.

The new LED fixtures will help reduce the Town’s electricity costs by 51% and maintenance costs by 80% because LEDs last up to four times longer than the town’s existing streetlights. LEDs will also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 28 metric tons per year, the equivalent of the carbon removed by 718 tree seedlings grown for ten years. Additional benefits of LED fixtures are the clear white light they produce as well as their ability to better target beams onto the streets and roadways, improving visibility and safety in addition to reducing light pollution.
