Cramahe Takes Green Step Forward With Streetlight Conversion Program

February 11, 2015

Safety and 64% Cost Savings make it compelling to make the switch

CRAMAHE, ON — A major eco-friendly initiative begins this week that will also deliver big municipal cost savings for Cramahe. This innovative township is upgrading its streetlight system to energy-efficient, light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights in a project that does not require the township to pay any capital upfront. Instead, Cramahe will fund the cost by sharing the annual savings in energy and maintenance costs thereafter. Upon completion of the project, Cramahe is expected to reduce energy use of its streetlight system by up to 64%.

RealTerm Energy provides an innovative, cost-saving strategy known as Energy Savings Performance Contracting (ESPC). Cramahe chose RealTerm Energy and Ontario’s Local Authority Services (LAS) to finance the streetlight upgrade and act as a project manager and installer.

Last term, the Township’s Green Committee focused on finding energy savings and safer, environmentally-friendly initiatives. “We want to save money in the long run and improve our environmental impact,’’ said Cramahe Township Mayor Marc Coombs.

Cramahe does not have unlimited resources. “We have several key infrastructure projects we need to work on – bridges, roads – and being able to off-load one of them was very important to us. The ESPC keeps us financially flexible,” continued Mayor Coombs. “Plus, we were constantly replacing bulbs and ballasts. Just the annoyance of having streetlights out, and it’s also safer for our residents!’’

Cramahe is one of more than 90 municipalities in Ontario that have engaged RealTerm Energy and LAS to provide their LED upgrades in the past year, including Kincardine, Quinte West and Minto.
