Eco-friendly Initiative To Bring Sustainability and Savings

October 09, 2015

Laurentian Valley, ON – A smart, energy-efficient initiative begins this week in the Township of Laurentian Valley. The Municipality is upgrading its streetlight system to light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights because LEDs will use 63% less electricity than the current, outdated system. That decreased energy use is also expected to result in a 63% savings on electricity costs to power the streetlights. LED streetlights also reduce maintenance costs by 80% because they last four times longer than traditional streetlights.

Laurentian Valley’s Municipal Council authorized Local Authority Services (LAS) and its partner RealTerm Energy to assess the existing street light network, create an energy efficient and cost-effective lighting design, and then coordinate the purchase of the new LED lights from CREE Canada, one of the world’s leading LED manufacturers. “The Township of Laurentian Valley is pleased to announce the LED Retrofit project with RealTerm Energy. This project brings many benefits for the Township and its residents including cost savings and an increase in safety for the community,” said Mayor Steve Bennett.

While consuming less energy, LEDs produce a clear, white light that improves night visibility and community safety. The beams of LEDs are more targeted than traditional streetlights to light only the streets and roadways, which helps reduce light pollution. LEDs will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the Township by an estimated 10 metric tonnes per year, the equivalent of the carbon removed by 256 tree seedlings grown for ten years.

The Township of Laurentian Valley is one of more than 130 Ontario municipalities that have chosen RealTerm Energy and Local Authority Services (LAS) to upgrade to LED street lighting, including Laurentian Hills, Arnprior and Barrie.
