LED Streetlight Installation Begins in the Township of Rideau Lakes

July 18, 2016

Rideau Lakes, ON– The Township of Rideau Lakes is moving forward with a major investment in energy-efficiency by upgrading its streetlight network to light-emitting diode (LED) technology that is expected to reduce the municipality’s streetlight energy costs by 66%. Installation of the new fixtures begins the week of July 18.

The reduced costs are made possible because LEDs will consume 67% less electricity than the high-pressure sodium lights they replace. The system of 506 luminaires will also be easier to maintain since LEDs last up to five times longer than the current streetlights. The upgrade is expected to reduce maintenance costs by up to 80%.

The retrofit will improve the municipality’s environmental footprint by annually reducing the Township’s greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 20 metric tonnes per year, the equivalent of the greenhouse gas emissions from 4 passenger vehicles driven for one year.

LED optics are designed to diffuse and distribute the light in a more precise manner than traditional streetlights, reducing glare and lighting only targeted areas.

The Township of Rideau Lakes selected RealTerm Energy and its partner LAS to carry the project forward. RealTerm Energy has surveyed the existing streetlight infrastructures, conducted professional lighting designs and chosen the most competent contractor in order to optimally integrate cobra head fixtures to its municipal roadways.

To date, over 140 Ontario municipalities have chosen to upgrade to LED street lighting with LAS and RealTerm Energy including the cities of Niagara Falls, London and Barrie.
