Kincardine Upgrading to LED Streetlights

February 11, 2015

KINCARDINE, ON— Soaring electricity prices and an aging streetlight system led Kincardine to upgrade to energy-efficient, light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights and reduce the use of energy for streetlights by an expected 63%. Installation of the 1,148 fixtures begins this week and residents will begin to notice their clear, white light improving visibility and community safety. The upgrade requires no municipal capital since the project is financed through an innovative cost-saving strategy known as an Energy Savings Performance Contracting (ESPC).

The ESPC is structured to fund the project’s financing with the money saved in the annual energy-efficiency of the system. “The financing option was very appealing to take advantage of so we would not have to put streetlights on our capital reserves – and could avoid raising taxes,” said Murray Clarke, Chief Administrative Officer and Director of Public Works for Kincardine.

The new LED system will also greatly reduce maintenance costs, a major issue with Kincardine’s aging system of urban, suburban and rural streetlights. LEDs last 3 to 5 times longer than traditional streetlights and they only begin to dim during the end of their lifespan rather than completely burning out.

Kincardine’s Municipal Council chose RealTerm Energy and Ontario’s Local Authority Services (LAS) to finance the streetlight upgrade and act as project manager and installer.  In the last 12 months, more than 90 Ontario municipalities have chosen RealTerm Energy and LAS to lead their LED streetlight upgrade including Owen Sound, Chatsworth and Minto.
