LED Streetlight Conversion Begins in The Blue Mountains

November 30, 2015

The Blue Mountains, ON – The Town of the Blue Mountains will soon benefit from improved lighting quality and significant energy efficiency and cost savings. Starting this week, installation crews will replace 794 of the Town’s streetlights. The new lighting system will help reduce annual electricity consumption by 58%. LEDs will also cut maintenance costs by 80% because LEDs last four times longer than the Town’s existing streetlights.

The project was initiated and designed by Ontario’s Local Authority Services (LAS) and RealTerm Energy using new LED streetlights from CREE Canada, one of the world’s leading LED manufacturers.

Jeffery Fletcher, Manager of Solid Waste and Environmental Initiatives for the Town, stated he “is excited to see the installations begin and pleased to be moving forward another project that works towards the Town’s Energy Management Plan”.

In addition to being energy-efficient, LEDs provide a white, clean directional light that shines light downward onto the road where it is needed, reducing light pollution and increasing visibility and safety. Upgrading to LEDs is also an environmentally conscious choice, for it will allow the Town to reduce its emission of greenhouse gases by 28 metric tonnes per year: the equivalent of the carbon removed by over 700 tree seedlings grown for ten years.

To date, over 130 Ontario municipalities have chosen to upgrade to LED street lighting with LAS and RealTerm Energy including Owen Sound, Wasaga Beach and Barrie.
