Minden Hills Upgrades to LED Streetlights

October 08, 2015

MINDEN HILLS, ON – Improved energy efficiency and cost savings are high priorities for the Township of Minden Hills in Haliburton County. The Township’s upgrade to light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights addresses both of these issues by cutting annual electricity consumption and electricity costs by 58%.  LEDs will also help reduce the Township’s maintenance costs by 80% because LEDs last up to four times longer than the Township’s existing streetlights. Installation of 190 cobra head streetlights is currently underway.

Minden Hills’ Municipal Council authorized Local Authority Services (LAS) and its partner RealTerm Energy to assess the existing street light network, create an energy efficient and cost-effective lighting design, and then coordinate the purchase of the new LED lights from CREE Canada, one of the world’s leading LED manufacturers. Working with LAS and RealTerm Energy, Minden Hills was able to take advantage of the expertise and buying power of their province-wide partnership to install a cost effective solution to the problem of rising energy and maintenance costs.

In addition to energy savings, LEDs produce a clear, white light that improves night visibility and community safety. The beams of LEDs are also more targeted than traditional streetlights to light only the streets and roadways, which helps reduce light pollution. LEDs will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Minden Hills by an estimated 8 metric tonnes per year, the equivalent of the carbon removed by 205 tree seedlings grown for ten years.

To date, over 130 municipalities in Ontario have chosen to upgrade to LED street lighting with LAS and RealTerm Energy including Gravenhurst, Bancroft and Barrie.
