New LED Streetlight Installation Underway in Greenstone, Ontario

July 10, 2014

Installation is in progress in Greenstone, Ontario to upgrade the current street light system to light emitting diode (LED) fixtures to improve lighting quality while providing the area significant energy efficiency and cost savings.  The project is replacing 660 streetlights across a vast territory of 100 kilometers in Northern Ontario. Installation is expected to complete by the end of July.

The LEDs are expected to help reduce Greenstone's energy costs by 65% and reduce maintenance costs by 80% because LEDs last up to four times longer than the town's existing streetlights.

LED light looks different because it is a whiter, cleaner light that is more targeted to light the street. The whiter, cleaner light provides better visibility for people on the roads while the targeted lighting reduces light pollution.  LEDs are also more environmentally friendly by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70% compared to traditional streetlights.

Greenstone's municipal council authorized Local Authority Services (LAS) and its partner RealTerm Energy to assess the existing street light network, create an energy efficient and cost-effective lighting design, and then coordinate the purchase of the new LED lights from CREE Canada, one of the world's leading LED manufacturers. Working with LAS and RealTerm Energy, Greenstone was able to take advantage of the expertise and buying power of their province-wide partnership to install a cost effective solution to the problem of rising energy and maintenance costs.

RealTerm Energy is leading LED street light upgrades across Ontario communities in nearly 50 other cities and towns including Deseronto, Marathon, Kapuskasing and Iroquois Falls.
