New LED Streetlights to Save Energy in Pickle Lake

November 09, 2016

PICKLE LAKE, ON–Starting November 11, 2016, the Township of Pickle Lake will begin upgrading its streetlight system to energy-efficient, light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights, as part of its commitment to reduce energy use and save on energy and maintenance costs for the future.

The sustainable upgrade will help reduce streetlight energy consumption by an estimated 67% because LEDs require far less electricity than the high-pressure sodium lights they are replacing. The retrofit will also cut streetlight maintenance costs by up to 80%, because LEDs are a solid state technology (with no moving parts) and last up to four times longer than the Municipality’s existing streetlights.

In addition to being energy-efficient, LED optics are designed to diffuse and distribute the light in a more precise manner than traditional streetlights thus reducing glare and lighting only targeted areas.

Upgrading to LEDs is an environmentally conscious choice, for it will allow Pickle Lake to annually reduce its emission of greenhouse gases by an estimated 6 metric tons, the equivalent of the carbon removed by 155 tree seedlings grown for the next 10 years.

The project was initiated and designed by Ontario’s Local Authority Services (LAS) and RealTerm Energy. To date, over 155 municipalities in Ontario have chosen to upgrade to LED street lighting with LAS and RealTerm Energy including Niagara Falls, London and Barrie.
