LED Streetlights Expected to Cut Streetlight Energy Costs by 72% in Quinte West

The City of Quinte West is making a major investment in energy-efficiency by upgrading its streetlight network to light-emitting diode (LED) technology that is expected to reduce the municipality’s streetlight electricity costs by 72%. Streetlight installations begin the week of December 1.

The reduced costs are made possible because LEDS are projected to consume 72% less electricity than the high-pressure sodium light blubs they replace. The system of 2,787 luminaires will also be easier to maintain since LEDs last up to five times longer than the older bulbs. The upgrade is expected to reduce maintenance costs by up to 80%.

“Quinte West is expecting a payback on this investment in less than four years when you combine the efficiency savings and the project incentives provided by the Ontario Power Authority,” said Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison.

“As we plan for our future in Quinte West, we look for projects that deliver efficiencies in operating costs as well as energy savings to put us in a responsible position in the years to come,” said Chris Angelo, Director of Public Works and Environmental Services. “To accomplish both in one upgrade is a big win for our City.”

The people of Quinte West will notice that LEDs provide a clear, white light that improves night visibility and community safety. The beams of LEDs are also more targeted than traditional streetlights to light only the streets, roadways or sidewalks, which helps reduce light pollution.

The City of Quinte West chose RealTerm Energy as the turn-key service provider as recommended by Local Authority Services (LAS) of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario. In the last 12 months, more than 85 Ontario municipalities have chosen RealTerm Energy and LAS to lead their LED streetlight upgrade. featured this project in the region's media coverage December 4, 2014.
